Whether ensconced in his retreat in the deepest English countryside or in London, Julian Mayor converts his line of thought into functional sculptures. He belongs to a generation of designers open to double-sided creation that combines the desire for a finely tuned digital project on his computer screen with actual physical work with materials.
Digital design serves the project, interpreting his inspiration, inviting an ‘inside out’ vision to explore proportions, before leaping into the world of sculpture. Attracted by the scientific rigour of ‘designs,’ he works the change in scale, the flat screen is suddenly transformed and the project comes to life, gaining volume with the click of the mouse. Whether an artist or a designer he doesn’t really care, the result is the important thing and what he likes is paradoxically the unpredictable nature of the practice, the beauty of the gesture: a trajectory that takes it from the virtual world to reality.
